大河ドラマ「龍馬伝」おもろい(^^)

好奇心と知識欲の為死罪を覚悟で黒船に乗り込もうとした吉田松陰。結局失敗してしまうが、当時のアメリカ人からは結構な評価をされていた様だ。

　この事件は、日本の厳重な法律を破り、知識を得るために命を賭けた二人の教養ある日本人の烈しい知識欲を示すもので、興味深いことであった。日本人は疑いなく研究好きな国民で、彼らの道徳的、知的能力を増大させる機会は、これを喜んで迎えるのが常である。この不幸な二人の行動は、日本人の特質より出たものであったと信じる。国民の抱いている烈しい好奇心をこれ以上によく示すものはない。日本人の志向がこのようなものであるとすれば、この興味ある国の前途は何と実のあるものであるか、その前途は何と有望であることか。

The event was full of interest, as indicative of the intense desire for information on the part
of two educated Japanese, who were ready to brave the rigid laws of the country, and
to risk even death for the sake of adding to their knowledge.

The Japanese are undoubtedly an inquiring people, and would gladly welcome an opportunity
for the expansion of their moral and intellectual faculties. In this disposition of the people
of Japan, what a field of speculation and, it may be added, what a prospect full of hope
opens for the future of that interesting country!

その他にも、当時欧米から見て圧倒的に文明後進国だった日本に関して、かなりベタ褒めしている文章が多い。「将来の機械工業の成功を目指す競争に加わるだろう。」とも。

日本人、もっかい奮起すべし。
